Navigating the world of scleral lenses is vital in ensuring your eye health and optimal vision. Inserting Scleral Lenses

1. Clean Hands: The process begins with a thorough hand washing. Use mild soap and a lint-free towel to dry your hands. This step is essential to prevent tiny fibers or contaminants from adhering to your lenses.

2. Eye Examination: Before inserting your lenses, examining your eyes for any redness or secretions is essential. If you experience any discomfort or changes in vision while wearing scleral lenses, don't hesitate to reach out to our office to schedule an eye exam.

3. Follow Professional Guidance: The experienced scleral lens team at CustomEyes - Lenexa will provide specific instructions on the best insertion techniques during your visit to our clinic. Here's a general guideline:

  • Place a mirror flat on the table in front of you.
  • Examine the cleaned lens for any debris or cloudiness by holding it against the light.
  • Fill the lens bowl with your saline solution.
  • You can use your fingers or a specialized inserter tool for lens insertion. If you opt for using your fingers, the tripod method (employing two or three fingers) ensures stability and a flat lens placement on your eye.
  • Focus your gaze downward into the mirror, use one hand to hold your eyelids open, and gently insert the lens into your eye using your other hand. When you feel the saline against your eye’s surface, gently press and release. The lens will adhere  to your eye. Repeat the same process for the second lens.

If you experience discomfort, it could be due to an air bubble trapped beneath the lens surface. In such cases, remove the lens and reinsert it following the guidelines.

Tips for Removing Scleral Lenses

Clean Hands: After thoroughly washing your hands, look straight ahead. There are two methods for removing scleral lenses:

  1. Using Your Fingers: Gently press on your eye and pull the lens upward and out.
  2. Using a Plunger: Attach the plunger to the lower third of the lens, gently press on your eye, and then pull the lens upward and out. With practice, lens removal will become natural and effortless.

General Tips for Scleral Contact Lens Care

Scleral contact lenses are an innovative solution for various eye conditions, but their maintenance is crucial for your eye health and visual comfort. Here are some essential tips to ensure proper care:

Follow Your Optometrist's Instructions: Abide by your eye care professional's recommendations for lens cleaning, disinfecting, and storage solutions.

Proper Lens Insertion: When inserting lenses, ensure they are debris-free.

Adequate Lubrication: Use lubricating eye drops or preservative-free artificial tears to maintain eye moisture while wearing scleral lenses.

Regular Cleaning: Clean your lenses daily with the prescribed cleaning solutions. Rub and rinse them to remove any debris or deposits.

Regular Check-ups: Schedule routine follow-up appointments with CustomEyes - Lenexa to monitor your eye health and lens fit.

Hydrogen Peroxide Care: If you use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaning system, ensure the lenses soak for the recommended duration before insertion.

Minimize Water Exposure: Avoid exposing your lenses to water, including swimming or showering while wearing them.

Avoid Overwearing: Stick to the recommended wearing time, especially if you're new to scleral lenses. Follow your optometrist's instructions for gradually increasing wear.

Replace Accessories: Replace your lens case regularly and follow care instructions to avoid contamination.

Emergency Removal Kit: Keep a lens removal kit with a plunger, spare lenses, and necessary accessories for unexpected situations.

Cleanliness: Maintain a clean lens storage case. Rinse it with saline and leave it open to air dry during the day.

Travel Precautions: When traveling, ensure you have all the necessary lens care items and spare lenses, and follow security regulations for carrying liquids.

Never Use Tap Water: Always avoid rinsing your lenses with tap water to avoid dangerous pathogens that can cause corneal ulceration leading to permanent vision loss.

Proper care and maintenance of your scleral lenses are essential to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. Always follow your optometrist's guidance for the best practices tailored to your needs.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience at Custom Eye in Lenexa. I brought my deaf... and autistic aunt in for a vision appointment, and I’ll admit—I was nervous about how the visit would go and whether they’d be able to properly accommodate her needs. The moment we walked in, all of my concerns completely disappeared. From the very start, Trudy and Megan at the front desk were incredibly warm and kind during check-in. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable right away. Our technician, Aiden, was absolutely amazing—professional, patient, and genuinely caring throughout the entire appointment. At one point, he even got down on the floor to help find my aunt’s glasses when she couldn’t locate them. That level of compassion and attentiveness meant so much to us. When it came time to choose frames, Jordyn was so helpful and patient, guiding us through the options. Samira and Regan also stepped in with their opinions and assistance, and their kindness truly stood out. It felt like a team effort to make sure my aunt felt confident and happy with her choice. And then there’s Dr. Chris Cossette—he was outstanding. Not only was he thorough and helpful, but he also offered to provide an ASL translator. Most importantly, he took his time and made the effort to find ways to effectively communicate with my aunt, ensuring she felt heard, understood, and respected. It’s rare to find a medical office where every single team member goes above and beyond, but that’s exactly what we experienced here. If you’re looking for compassionate, inclusive, and truly patient-centered eye care, Custom Eye in Lenexa is the place to go. We are beyond grateful for the care we received. 💛

Love the staff here. They're so friendly and fun. They laugh at my bad jokes and converse with me. I... 've seen Dr Cossette the last 2 or 3 times and he's been amazing every time. Thoroughly explains the pictures and is very quick and efficient with the exams.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars ⭐️ Highlights: - Same day appointments!? - Anna Sadler is ... incredible! 1) The biggest factor for me on my rating was the optometrist I saw for my appointment, Anna Sadler. That woman KNOWS her stuff. She has fixed the prescriptions for both me and my husband now (goodbye unnecessary eye strain!) and even got me into better contacts that are wildly cheaper than my previous ones, have blue light filtering (yes, blue light!?), and are more comfortable than the ones I had been previously been using. 2) In addition to the great appointment experience, was that I was able to get a same day (they had an slot open 1 hour from when I looked!), and I had tons of other appointment options. The optometrist I was going to go to originally was booked 3 weeks out somehow, so this was so relieving because I was out of my contacts and desperate. 3) Overall, the staff is all very kind, professional, and super on top of it. The office got busy but they kept it moving very smoothly, it was really impressive. The front waiting and glasses fitting area can get a little tight, but the staff were great about keeping people moving as much as possible, and a teeny tiny bit of tightness didn’t matter to me since I was able to get an appointment so quickly and had the pleasure of seeing Anna Sadler and ACTUALLY getting my vision issues corrected. 15/10 would recommend, these guys were really great!

I enjoyed my time today at this location. All the staff were friendly & helpful & the Doctor was ver... y laid back & informative. Also, there were no high pressured sales tactics to purchase glasses on the spot & the tech staff were very upfront with any costs outside of insurance one might incur if they chose to have certain tests done. Great experience & that's rare I say that about eye doctors!

Dr Luebbe did a great job with my eye exam and the front didn't hesitate to place my lenses in frame... s I brought in from elsewhere. They handled my insurance with no issues. I believe it was two weeks to get them made. I'm a new glasses wearer and so far it's been fantastic.

Wonderful staff - smart, kind, answered questions clearly, and didn't try to hard-sell ridiculously ... expensive frames on people.
- Feb. 10, 2022
Wonderful, thoughtful service. My new eye care company.
- Feb. 10, 2022
It was very easy to schedule an appointment online. Everyone at the practice is very friendly and he... lpful! Dr. Luebbe does a great job of a full examination and explains why she is asking questions, and walks you through any suggestions she has. They even gave a suggestion of where I could find the recommended over the counter eye drops for the lowest price, I didn't even have to ask. This was a great experience and I will definitely go back!
